THREE BARNS
SUN VALLEY, IDAHO
Three Barns settles into the sagebrush benches of Idaho’s Big Wood Valley, its three volumes each oriented toward a different mountain range. Glass breezeways link spaces for living, resting, and recreation, allowing the landscape to flow between them and making movement through the house an experience of weather, light, and season.
Wood reclaimed from centuries-old local barns was carefully installed to preserve its original orientation to the sun.
Clad in centuries-old wood reclaimed from local barns, the familiar forms transform with the seasons. Each board was reinstalled in the same orientation in which it originally weathered, preserving its natural patina and relationship to the region. Large shutters open the house to the landscape in summer and close against the deep snow of winter, creating an architecture that shifts between openness and shelter throughout the year.
