THREE BARNS
SUN VALLEY, IDAHO
Three Barns settles into the sagebrush benches of Idaho’s Big Wood Valley, its three volumes each oriented toward a different mountain range. Glass breezeways link spaces for living, resting, and recreation, allowing the landscape to flow between them and making movement through the house an experience of weather, light, and season.
The architecture changes with the seasons rather than resisting them.
Large timber shutters transform the barns with the seasons, opening to mountain air and expansive views in summer and closing against Idaho’s snowy winters to create a more protective enclosure. The familiar barn archetype is further reinterpreted through a heavy-timber frame clad in wood reclaimed from the nearby Camas Prairie. Each board was installed in the same orientation in which it originally weathered, preserving its natural patina and carrying traces of its previous life into the new architecture.
