STAN FIELD WINS 2005 DESIGN AWARDS FROM AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

San Mateo, December 5, 2005 – International architect, Stan Field of Stan Field Associates (www.fieldarchitecture.com), has won the American Institute of Architects, San Mateo Chapter, 2005 Design Awards (www.aiasmc.org) in two categories. A fresh new approach to the design of an affordable contemporary home in Los Altos won the New Single Family Residential category and an ecologically-based housing estate in South Africa won the Unbuilt category. The 2005 Design Awards highlight excellence in architectural design.

Field, who studied with renowned architect Louis Kahn, (www.myarchitectfilm.com) and was an outstanding student at Kahn’s master class, noted that two key factors came together that allowed him to push the envelope: A willing and enlightened client and a forward-looking Architectural Review Committee.

First prize: Built Single Family category: The prestigious Citation Award was awarded to Field in the Single Family category as the new home “…goes so much further than just a livable environment” said a juror. “I designed a house to capture the spirit of the traditional California Ranch reinterpreted in a contemporary expression of both style of living, low maintenance and sustainable use of materials and efficiency,” said Field, Founder and Senior Architect, of his tightly-knit, design-oriented firm located in Palo Alto. “The design exploits the superb climate by making use of extensive roof overhangs that create outdoor rooms which become multiple use spaces for outdoor cooking, eating, play and recreation. This gives the feeling of almost doubling the usable area.”

First prize: Unbuilt Design category: In addition, Field was sole winner of the Honor Award in the Unbuilt category, with his self sustaining eco system: Ubuntu Habitat. Jurors described his design in terms of “an eloquent gesture” and “a response to space, time & sight”. The client’s brief called for an ecologically based housing estate in a pristine country setting in South Africa (planned for 2006 start). Field designed a prototype generic house that set the stage for another 10 eco houses to be privately commissioned (www.UbuntuStyle.Com). “The form of the architecture draws its inspiration from the poetry in the landscape and its expression is a spirited affirmation of it,” mused Field.
